A personal reflection about Paul’s letter to the Romans

Sometimes I struggle with doubts as a Christian. Did God really come to earth as Jesus? Did his resurrection really happen? Do I really believe in Him? Am I really saved? Am I really a Christian?

Romans has really helped me this year.

Am I really a Christian?
Read Romans 7:21-24.

In my inner self, I do joyfully agree with God’s law. I want to do God’s will. And I do struggle against sin. Yes, I do struggle and that is the point. I do wage war. Yes, what a wretched woman I am, but with God’s Spirit, I wrestle with sin. And this shows me that I have his Spirit.

Am I really a Christian? Yes, I have God’s Spirit fighting sin and thanks be to God that my salvation comes from Jesus.

Is there really life after death? Will I really be raised to life after death?
Read Romans 8:11.

Jesus rose from the dead. It was written down by eyewitnesses who saw it happen. And these writings would have seen by many hundreds, maybe thousands of people, who were alive during the time of Jesus. If these events did not happen, they would have disputed it and the writings would not have lasted.

In history, God has shown that He is powerful enough to raise the dead, by raising Jesus. And Romans tells me that if I have God’s Spirit (the same Spirit that rose Jesus from the dead), then He will be able to raise me from the dead too. In fact he has told me in this verse that He will bring my mortal body back to life for eternity.

Is there really life after death? Will I really be raised to life after death?
Yes, therefore I do not need to fear death but instead, look forward to life after death with Jesus.

Will God really save me, as wretched as I am?
Read Romans 5:8-10

If God was willing to reconcile me and allow his own son to die for me when I was his enemy, I can be so reassured that now I am his friend he will save me on the last day.

Read Romans 8:1-2

God has saved me, while I was his enemy and now there is no condemnation for me, as wretched as I am.

Will God really save me, as wretched as I am? Yes!

What if I go into that darkness again? What if I get bad depression again? What if things get really really bad? Will I stay true to God? Will I cope?
Read Romans 8:23-25

In my future suffering, I will remember that my suffering is not a surprise to God and shouldn’t be a surprise to me. In fact our creation is groaning because of Adam’s first sin. It is normal for me to groan within myself in this world, desperate for the redemption of my body, and for heaven to come.

If I get sick again, I will groan. And I will wait.

And yet, I am so comforted by the fact that God’s Spirit is in me and will be with me through any future suffering.

What have I learnt?
Romans 8:38 - “I am persuaded that not even death or life, angels or rulers, things present or things to come, hostile powers, height or depth, or any other created thing will have the power to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord!” Amen!
