Weekly SNAC, 22 February 2015 - Theology For Life

Last year at Church In the Bank we started something new called Theology For Life. Theology simply means “the study of God”, and we’ve called it Theology For Life, because it’s theology (the wonderful truths of the gospel) that gives us life (eternal life in Christ!), and, we as Church In the Bank want to think hard about theology and stretch our minds, but in a way that’s practical for life; in a way that means we know God better and therefore know how to live the life he’s given us.

This year Theology For Life is taking a bit of a different format. Instead of once a month one-hour meetings, we are going to spend three Sunday afternoons (4-6pm) in a row, thinking about and focusing on one aspect of theology, and we will do this twice in the year.

Who can come? Anyone who wants to grow in his or her knowledge and love of God (i.e. hopefully you!). But Theology For Life will be of particular help to you if you are at university or “Uni age”. At this stage of life you come up against all sorts of different ideas and worldviews, and so it’s important to make sure that we know what we believe, and why we believe it, so we can have a strong foundation when we face lots of different worldviews.

Why should you come? For many of us at Church In the Bank we are at the stage of life where we are working out what it is to be a man or woman who lives for Jesus. We are learning lots of new things about lots of different topics and we are forming habits and patterns for our future. As followers of Jesus we want our thoughts, habits and lives to be shaped and sharpened by God’s word, not the messages our world constantly throws at us.

In Colossians 1 Paul prays this for the church in Colossae:

9 … We are asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding, 10 so that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to Him, bearing fruit in every good work and growing in the knowledge of God.

Paul’s prayer is wonderful, isn’t it?! It’s a prayer that asks God that we would understand him better, and so live for him better – to have lives shaped and sharpened by him, and this is the goal of Theology For Life. That’s not to say that we don’t do this at church or in our Gospel teams, but this will be in a more focused way – looking closely at what the Bible has to say about a given doctrine and figuring out why it’s important and what we should do about it.

Location: St James, Carlton
Time: 4-6pm
Dates: Series 1: Sunday 22 February, 1 & 8 March
          Series 2: Sunday 19, 26 July, 2 August

Also, if you get the chance, have a look at this video that captures a little bit of why we want to do this: (or type “theology matters” into YouTube).

We pray that everyone at Church In the Bank (and whoever else wants to join us!) might want to be a part of this and that through our time together we will grow more firm in the faith and more Christ-like. And if you can’t make it, please pray this for Church In the Bank!

Your brother in Christ,

Troy Munns
