At the upcoming INVEST conference for Church in the Bank I will be speaking on the topic of guidance and decision-making. In my preparation I’ve been struck by the fact that as we go about making decisions, big and small, what we need more than anything else is wisdom.
Happy is a man who finds wisdom
and who acquires understanding,
for she is more profitable than silver,
and her revenue is better than gold.
She is more precious than jewels;
nothing you desire compares with her.
Wisdom is different to intelligence. Wisdom is different to knowledge. Some very smart people are fools. Other people of below average intelligence are very wise. Wisdom is a matter of understanding and relating to God rightly so that we then know ourselves and our world rightly.
The fear of the LORD
is the beginning of knowledge;
fools despise wisdom and discipline.
How do we gain wisdom? We seek it by studying God’s word and we pray for God to give it to us.
Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives to all generously and without criticizing, and it will be given to him.
