Weekly SNAC, 13 March 2016 - Grumpy Day

Some days, everything seems to go wrong and everyone feels grumpy. And sometimes, not even a hug from Mum can fix things up!

Grumpy Day is the story of Mum, Luke, Emily and Ben. Everyone is having a bad day! Little Ben’s blocks just won’t stack, Emily can’t get her toy animals to sit up in her train and Luke can’t go outside and kick his ball because it’s raining.

Ben can’t understand why God won’t stop the rain! “Why would anyone want it to rain? Rain is wet and yukky. No one likes rain!”

The story contains a wonderfully clear message about the disappointments of life, the goodness of God and what to do when you feel grumpy. It’s a beautifully written and illustrated children’s book that would make a wonderful addition to any child’s library.

Grumpy Day is one book in a series of children’s books about a Christian family. The aim of the series is to help families use the everyday things of life to talk to their children about God, helping them to grow up in a world where God is at the centre.

At the beginning of each book there is a ‘notes for parents’ section. It has some questions to discuss, some activities to do and some things you could pray about together as a family. It’s really helpful!

There are 3 things I really like about this series:
1. The stories are engaging to read and beautifully illustrated. They’re just really nice kids’ books.

2. They help families to do what Deuteronomy 6:4-7 says when it talks about teaching your children God’s laws: ‘Talk about them all the time, whether you’re at home or walking along the road or going to bed at night, or getting up in the morning.’ The books teach families to make the most of the little opportunities that crop up each day to point kids to God and put him at the centre of their lives.

3. They give kids opportunities and language to talk about how they feel and ask their questions about God and the world around them. Growing up in a Christian family I sometimes thought it wasn’t ok to question God or doubt him. These books will give your children opportunities to question God and the world around them in a helpful way that will hopefully lead to their growth.

So if you have kids or grandkids, nieces or nephews, Godchildren or even friends with kids, Grumpy Day would be a wonderful gift to add to their library.
