Weekly SNAC, 26 November 2017 - The Word One to One

I am always on the look out for new resources that help equip our teenagers for reading the Bible together. Recently I stumbled across the Word One to One series.

This series was produced by the team at St Helen’s, Bishopshgate, (London) as a resource to equip their church members read the Bible 1 to 1. The series comes in four packs covering the entire Gospel of John. Each pack contains a set of books – one for you and one for the person you are reading with. For example, pack one has three sets of studies covering John 1-4.

Here’s how it’s described on the Word One to One website: “The Word One to One is a resource designed to walk you and your friends through the good news found in John’s Gospel.” And that’s exactly what I’ve found it to be, and one of the main reasons I like it. This is not a traditional ‘study’ with questions and answers: It’s more of a discussion guide to the passage that points out some important information, explains unusual or difficult words and ideas, gives some helpful background or raises significant implications out of the text.

Here’s what I like about it:

- Anyone can use it, teenagers and adults alike.

- You can read it with anyone. Both your Christian brother and your work-mate who doesn’t know Jesus can read this with you.

- It’s designed to get you focused on the text of John and spending your time talking about that, rather than focussing on a study and trying to work out what the question writer was looking for.

- It’s designed to give you confidence in the power of God’s word and in your ability to understand and explain it without being an expert.

- It’s re-usable. Keep a set and when you’ve finished reading it with your neighbour, read it with your sister!

- It’s flexible. You can just read John 1. Or you can go through all the way to John 21. Or somewhere in between. It’s up to you.

- It has a really nice visual aesthetic that helps with seeing the key elements in a passage.

- It’s relatively cheap: One pack costs about $15. You can save on postage by ordering all the packs at once.

- It works through the Gospel of John. Often this kind of resource works with Mark or Luke as a more ‘accessible’ option. Here, the mysterious intrigue and powerful claims of John’s Gospel are allowed to speak for themselves.

- There is a whole lot of support on their website (www.theword121.com.au) to get you underway and on the right track.

With 2018 just around the corner, why not start planning to read the Bible regularly 1-1 with someone next year. Maybe something like the Word One to One series is just what you need to help you do that.
